Techniques Series: Masking

Techniques Series Masking How to use Party Pattern Masks and ink from Stampin' Up!

Stamping Techniques Series

Oh, I am so excited! I have been trying to launch this series for a few weeks…. and I have finally managed to get a couple of tutorials filmed AND the blog post written!

Each week on a Friday I will be coming to you with a fun Technique… and the first few weeks are going to focus on Masking. I LOVE masking, but there are heaps of different ways to go about it, and so I thought I would share a few of those with you.

Techniques Series Masking How to use Party Pattern Masks and ink from Stampin' Up!

This first week I thought I would share the easiest Masking technique I know… using the Pattern Party Masks and ink!

Top Tips for masking:

  • Tape your card stock AND your mask down to your work surface; I will often use Sticky Notes or Sticky Note Tape, or Washi Tape to do this
  • Ensure that your Ink Pads are well inked
  • Dab your sponge into the ink and then onto the project, using a dabbing motion rather than a swirling motion ensures that all that lovely ink gets into the tight areas of the mask and onto the project rather than wasted

Cardmaking How To video How to use Masks in card making using Pattern Party Masks from Stampin' Up!

These fun cards use the Eastern Medallions Thinlits dies, and the Eastern Beauty Stamp set to create these fun and simple cards.

I love the look of the blue version, with some of the small pieces left in the die cut…. Which one is your favourite?

One Sheet Wonder!

One Sheet Wonder using Fresh Florals from Stampin' Up!

I love crafting with my crafting friends…. we don’t get chance to get together very often, but I just LOVE it when we do. A few weekends ago we got together at a fabulously crafty retreat, and my lovely friend Heidi shared a great One Sheet Wonder project.

I had so much fun putting this project together, although the cutting was stressful!

We had a choice of colour, and I picked the beautiful Fresh Fig and the Thankful Thoughts Stamp set to make these fun cards

One Sheet Wonder using Fresh Florals from Stampin' Up!

This fabulous project uses just one sheet of Designer Series Paper and gives you 14 fabulous cards! but can you spot my mistake…. hadn’t noticed until I came to take the photographs! Oops!

I have a video on a very similar project from earlier in the year…. that you can find HERE where you can also find a full cutting guide PDF download too.

Short and sweet today… but don’t forget that you can find all the card stock and Designer Series Paper that I used here over on my webstore, and the links to the products are below!

Guy Greetings Birthday Card using Embossing Paste

Guy Greetings Birthday Card using Embossing Paste from Stampin' Up!

As soon as I spotted the Embossing Paste in the new annual Catalogue I knew I HAD to try it! I have never used embossing paste before, but I love the look of it. However, once it arrived, I froze, I took the lid off, but I couldn’t use it!

So, when James reminded me that he needed a Birthday Card for his older brother at the end of last month, I decided to put on my big girl pants and give this stuff a go! Although, I did make him pick the stamps!

Guy Greetings Birthday Card using Embossing Paste from Stampin' Up!

So, I stamped the sentiments first in Archival Basic Black ink onto Whisper White card stock, and then stamped the Guy onto a separate piece of card stock. He was the coloured in using Watercolour Pencils and a blender pen, and fussy cut.

The embossing paste was really easy to use… I have a glass top on my desk and I dumped a large pea sized amount of paste onto the desk and added a drop of Bermuda Bay reinker. The paste is really easy to move and mix with the Palette Knives that you can find with the paste in the catalogue. I used one of the new Pattern Party Decorative Masks to create this fun pattern, and added a sprinkling of Dazzling Diamonds Stampin’ Glitter before it was dry. The embossing paste does take a few minutes to dry, but its not long, but long enough that it gives you time to make sure you mask, desk and palette knife is clean! I would advise that you make sure that your equipment is cleaned after each use, embossing paste is hard once it is dry and REALLY difficult to get off!

Guy Greetings Birthday Card using Embossing Paste from Stampin' Up!Once the embossing paste was dry I added the Guy onto the front of the card with some dimensionals, and stamped the inside of the card to match!

Another venture into Shabby Chic….

Shabby chic congratulations card using Sheet Music stamp from Stampin' Up!

Ok, so a few weeks ago I attempted to make a shabby chic style card for my lovely friend Amanda…. just after I made that I discovered that I needed a congratulations card pretty quickly! My darling little brother popped the question to his lovely girlfriend…. and as a card maker, I HAD to send a hand made congratulations!

Shabby chic congratulations card using Sheet Music stamp from Stampin' Up!

This card was super super simple to put together… although it does use a couple of stamp sets and a die set! But when your brother gets engaged I think that’s allowed. The background is the new Sheet Music background stamped in Crumb Cake onto Very Vanilla. I added some inking around the edges too, to add to the vintage / shabby effect. I actually added the same to a corner of the inside of the card too….

Wedding Congratulations card using Sheet Music and Eclectic Layers thinlits from Stampin' Up!

The sentiment is from Floral Phrases, stamped in Rich Razzleberry and heat embossed in clear onto Vellum.

That fabulously sparkly, gold glitter diamond was the whole inspiration for this card. I die cut the diamond using the Eclectic Layers dies in Gold Glimmer paper… but then, how to you attach something that detailed onto a card?! Well, Stampin’ Up! have that covered…. the new Multipurpose Adhesive Sheets. I LOVE these! They are super easy to use (and VERY sticky!) Just add the sheet to the back of your card stock before you die cut it…. and you have adhesive already on your die cuts! Awesome…. don’t worry, I have a video coming really soon!

Pootlers Design Team | I am so grateful

Pootles Papercraft Design Team Watercolour floral Thank You card using Remarkable You from Stampin' Up!

Pootles Papercraft Design Team November 2016

Well, before I get into today’s card I just want to say Thanks; Thanks to my lovely friend Sam for choosing me as part of the Design Team this month and for sending me this fabulous stamp set to play with! Thanks to everyone who has popped over to my little corner of the internet during June, and Thanks to everyone who has commented, emailed, or shopped with me this month. Seriously, Thank you!

Pootles Papercraft Design Team Watercolour floral Thank You card using Remarkable You from Stampin' Up!

This fabulously watercoloured card was the final card I made during my epic card making session for the Design Team, and I LOVE it! The flower was stamped first onto watercolour paper, and then again onto a piece of sticky note that I then used as a mask, before stamping the leaves. The colours here are Fresh Fig, Pear Pizzazz and Pool Party.

Pootles Papercraft Design Team Watercolour floral Thank You card using Remarkable You from Stampin' Up!

The partial fussy cutting was easy… seriously these stamps look like they are going to take ages to fussy cut, but really they are simple shapes and are less complex to cut out than they look. Once I had cut part of the way around the flower, I got out my trimmer to cut a straight edge to complete the partial fussy cut. Then I completed the watercolour by watercolouring the background in Soft Sky, leaving the leaves white.

The background is a simple tone on tone stamped affair, with a trio of jewels to finish.

Thanks again for stopping by today, and don’t forget to subscribe to my newsletter before you leave. Hope to see you here again soon!

Simply Sketched Saturday Challenge | Colour Challenge!

Just Because card using Crafting Forever and Work of Art from Stampin' Up!

Stampin' Up! Sketch Challenge

Something slightly different for this months Simply Sketched Saturday Challenge…. this month I have set the girls a colour theme!

I am loving playing with the new In-Colours from this years Annual catalogue… but I wanted to push myself away from using them as a set of colours, and towards integrating them into the rest of our inks. I cannot wait to see what the other ladies have done with this combo!

Simply Sketched Saturday Challenge Colour Challenge Creative Card using Work of Art and Crafting Forever from Stampin' Up!

I am a big believer in the power of craft…. I use my crafting as a creative escape, a de-stress, and ‘me time’ away from my busy personal life and hectic day job. I love nothing more than being able to set aside a a few hours, a whole day, or even just 10 minutes in my craft room with my stamps and ink. Crafting is more to me than just making pretty things (although, I love to make pretty things!) its about the friendships I have made whilst crafting. I am so lucky to have some wonderful friends through stamping, the ladies that are hopping with me today are just a handful. They are all so special….. and I hope that on this sunny Saturday that they are ‘doing something creative!’….. actually I know that a few of them are, because this weekend we are on a crafty retreat, stamping, making pretty things…. and spending some much needed time in the spa!

Just Because card using Crafting Forever and Work of Art from Stampin' Up!

This card uses two stamp sets; Crafting Forever and Work of Art. The sentiment and paint brushes are stamped in Smoky Slate, and die cut using the Stitched Shapes dies (I still can’t put these away!). I have incorporated the colour theme into the stamped panel…. dots from ‘Work of Art’ stamped in Fresh Fit, Blushing Bride and Calypso Coral.

Measurements:

Card Base – Blushing Bride – Half a piece of A4, folding in half (21 x 14.8 cm, scored at 10.5 cm)

Smoky Slate layer – 14.8 x 5.8 cm

Whisper White layer – 14.8 x 5.5 cm

I hope you have enjoyed stopping by today, please do hop along to my wonderful friend Sally to see what she has made with this fab colour combo!

Sending Lots of Love

Sending Love card using Lots of Love and Colour Theory from Stampin' Up!

I have a super quick card for you today… I will admit that this week I have not been particularly organised, I am blaming the fact that I have had one random night shift at the day job AND that I am away on a team crafty retreat this weekend and so have been busy making swaps for the ladies who will be joining me on Saturday…. although I’m not sure that either is a particularly good excuse!

Sending Love card using Lots of Love and Colour Theory from Stampin' Up!

This card is another one of the samples I made for Stampin’ Up! OnStage Live in Amsterdam back in April. This is actually the very first card I made with my goodies and I love it! There is one gorgeous stamp set at work here – Lots of Love, that sentiment…. it just sings to me! So, the sentiment is stamped in Archival Basic Black ink, and then I have added the leave details in Berry Burst, Lemon Lime Twist and Tranquil Tide.

The background of this card is Designer Series Paper taken from the Colour Theory paper stack. I am loving this pack of Designer Series Paper; it features four colours (Berry Burst, Crushed Curry, Dapper Denim, and Old Olive) and a variety of paint effects including this fab crackle and some pretty ombre!

Thanks for stopping by my little corner of the internet today, please check back again tomorrow for a fabulous blog hop!

Pootlers Design Team | One Layer Card

Pootles Papercraft Design Team Remarkable You One Layer Ink Blended Just Because Card using Stampin' Up! products

Pootles Papercraft Design Team November 2016

Week 3 of the Pootler’s Design Team for June… this month we are using the gorgeous Remarkable You. My card this week is a simple one…. actually it’s so simple, its just one layer!

Pootles Papercraft Design Team Remarkable You One Layer Ink Blended Just Because Card using Stampin' Up! products

I love a bit of ink blending… give me an ink pad, a sponge and a scrap of card stock and I can keep myself entertained for hours! The circle is created using a mask – I die cut the largest of the layering circle framelits from a piece of copier paper, and ink blend through the circle. I love the crisp edges this creates, but you do have to be careful that your card and/or mask don’t move (this is where my shares in Washi Tape pay off!)

Pootles Papercraft Design Team Remarkable You One Layer Ink Blended Just Because Card using Stampin' Up! products

The colours on this card are Pool Party, So Saffron and Lemon Lime Twist… and then the stamping is in Basic Gray.

I hope you enjoyed this quick and simple card, see you again next Thursday for my final Remarkable You card (although you can always come back tomorrow for a different card creation, or subscribe to my blog or emails for even more from me!)
